Rwanda: Fruits

Rwanda’s tropical location, as well as range in elevations (from 3,000 to 14,500 feet above sea level) blesses Rwanda with many growing seasons and diverse produce.

Passion fruit (maracuja): sweet and bitter, part of many Rwandan hotel breakfasts. You eat the seeds and flesh inside, not the skin.

Tree Tomato (tamarillo): tangy and sweet, another fruit to eat with he seeds inside, not the skin.

Physalis: Unwrap those beautiful leaf packages to eat these berries whole.

Guava: Eat the flesh and/or skin of these fruits. Also a delicious fruit drink!

Jackfruit: a slightly sweet fruit, cut open the hard shell and enjoy the inside flesh. It can be eaten as is or cooked. The fruit also has a high protein content, used by some vegetarians in the place of meat in curries.

Papaya: another Rwandan favorite - I’ve found you love it or you hate it. The inside is soft and sweet with a creamy texture. Some people (often the haters) speak to a light “tuna” taste. Try it alongside many breakfasts.

Mango, Banana, Pineapple: Some widely renowned international favorites. Be aware that bananas come in many varieties, currently more than 60 types in Rwanda - with all sorts of sizes, colors, firmness, and sweetness.
