Iceland: Hot dogs & skyr

Food is, first and foremost, expensive in Iceland. Not much grows fresh near the arctic circle. So come prepared to spend money in restaurants, cook your own food, or eat cheap in the gas station. I often went cheap - especially on the long stretches between towns while driving Iceland’s 1332 kilometer (828 mile) Ring Road.
Hot dogs: Hot dogs are a local (and foreign) favorite. They can be found in little restaurants connected to Icelandic gas stations, complete with a little condiment bar with plenty of choices. Hot dogs can be bacon wrapped, served plain or with cheese. And they are outrageously cheap compared to sit-down restaurant service.

Skyr: Yogurt from sheep's milk. It is thick, slightly sour, but also contains a hint of sweetness. I personally enjoyed it more with a mix of vanilla or fruit (though fresh fruits in Iceland are pricey).

Where to get them: Both are found in every gas station. A delicious and sustaining option for travel around Iceland's sparsely populated Ring Road.
