Counties: past & present
County counting through photography means that one person can capture one moment – one tiny perspective – frozen in place and time. Through sharing photos taken by myself and my Grandpa – there are numerous comparisons of a single place (bounded by county lines) sometime during the last century.
I've compiled some of these favorites, taken between 1941 and 2021. Flip back-and-forth between these photos – it is easy to see the extent of change (or lack thereof) across our country. And similarly, I’ve noticed that our eyes land upon so many different American landmarks, people, and ideas.

Imagine just how many other stories exist across all 3,143 counties! 330 million people; one moment, one day in the life of your county. In 2021, 9,969,510 people lived in just Los Angeles County, California while only 64 people lived in Loving County, Texas (our country’s most/least populous counties).
